About Classes

CYT Atlanta offers classes for children ages 7-18 over the course of two sessions during the school year: Fall and Spring. Weekly classes last for two hours and run for twelve weeks. A variety of classes are offered in drama, voice, dance, and specialty classes that vary per session. We hold classes on three different days during the week so you can pick a class that works with your schedule. Most of the classes are small to insure personal attention and growth.

At the end of a CYT session, students will come away with improved skills in the area of emphasis. During the last week of class, a high-energy showcase is presented by each class to demonstrate to other students, family, and friends what they have learned.

Curriculum

CYT offers a wide variety of classes, and they all enable students to gain valuable theater arts training, develop confidence and make friends!  We provide class offerings for all skill levels including core classes in acting, dancing, and voice, as well as enrichment classes. Teachers follow a curriculum guide that allows us to create a comprehensive class structure.

Class Structure

CORE 1—Core 1 classes are foundational classes that either focus on one foundational skill (like character development) or give an overview of many foundational skills. Core 1 classes are meant to be taken over and over again because theatrical foundations are endless and continuing to strengthen these skills is paramount to creating a well-rounded performer. Curriculum is adjusted to be appropriate to the age, meaning more advanced foundational skills will be taught to older students.

CORE 2—Core 2 classes build upon the foundational skills learned in Core 1 classes. In math, students must understand arithmetic before tackling algebra, likewise, theatrical concepts build upon one another. Core 2 classes are for driven students who have foundational skills that they wish to take to the next level.

APEX—CYT’s Audition Only Company, Apex is for students who wish to utilize their skills in competitive/performance-driven setting. Apex classes will vary per session depending on the project. Students are required to have completed at least one Core 1 class in order to audition.

ENRICHMENT—Enrichment classes are classes that focus on a stand alone theatrical technique. Classes like Costume Design, Improv, and Stage Combat would be considered enrichment classes. Students are encouraged to take enrichment classes to broaden their understanding of the theatrical arts.

Teachers

A CYT Teacher’s mission is to train and instruct students in such a way as to promote the development of character, self-esteem, and confidence. CYT teachers are qualified and experienced in the area in which they teach. They have been trained in the CYT methods of instruction and agree with the CYT values and outcome goals.  All CYT teachers have been background checked and adhere to our CYT Mission and Values. Our teachers truly care about their students and provide a constructive and fun environment for them to learn.

Find Your Character Project

The Find Your Character Project is an initiative focused on strategically and intentionally infusing character development into every aspect of CYT. If you’ve been around theater arts for any length of time, you know that it provides a fantastic vehicle for character development to be “caught.” The Find your Character Project ensures character development is intentionally taught. Every semester features a Key Character Trait and several secondary traits that will be introduced, encouraged, and integrated in class

Decathlon Award

The Decathlon Award recognizes exceptional CYT students who have demonstrated a love for theater by pursuing a well-rounded education in the theater arts and who have exhibited a character consistent with CYT values. The award includes a certificate of recognition, as well as a personal letter of recommendation from the CYT National Board of Directors. Each recipient will automatically receive the title of “CYT National Decathlon Scholarship Finalist” and will be eligible for one of two $500 scholarships. The National Board of Directors will review the applications, essays, and recommendations and choose two scholarship winners.
